When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022, abortion opponents celebrated. In the wake of the decision, 15 largely conservative states imposed near-total bans (through trigger laws or new legislation), and two more set limits at six weeks of pregnancy.
This November Ohioans will decide whether to enshrine reproductive rights in the state’s constitution. For now, specific language approved by the Ohio Ballot Board for the summary of that constitutional amendment is pending before the Ohio Supreme Court.
In the next battleground state on abortion, activists win the first round in an effort to safeguard abortion rights.
Play fair or play dirty. Issue 1 showed Ohio voters how state Republicans play when they can’t persuade. Extremists know most Ohioans support the right to abortion within limits. The outright ban on abortion gerrymandered pols seek is wildly unpopular. Convincing rational minds otherwise is pointless. So Ohio’s GOP overlords cheat to win.
Ahead of the abortion rights vote in November, the GOP-led Ohio Supreme Court announced that they will be hearing a case that could reinstate a controversial law that bans the vast majority of abortions.
